Margit the Fell Omen: The Gateway Boss That Filters Everyone

Margit the Fell Omen is the first major wall Elden Ring throws at you, and for good reason — he's a skill test designed to teach you how the game works. Brute-forcing him won't cut it. This guide breaks down every phase, every attack, and every dirty trick to put the old man down for good.

Preparation Checklist

Before you even think about stepping into that arena, make sure you're ready:

  • Recommended Level: 20–25 (with appropriate weapon upgrades)
  • Weapon: At least +3 on any standard weapon, or +1 on a Somber weapon
  • Consumables: Stock up on Boluses and Crimson Flasks
  • Margit's Shackle: Available from Patches for 5,000 runes — pins Margit to the ground twice in Phase 1
  • Spirit Ash Summon: Lone Wolf Ashes or Jellyfish Ashes work great here

Phase 1: Reading His Moveset

Margit's Phase 1 is about patience. He has a wide swing range and loves to punish panic rolls. Here's what to watch for:

  • Hammer Overhead Slam: Delayed hit — don't roll too early. Wait for his arm to drop.
  • Dagger Combo: He summons magical daggers and slashes in a 1-2-3 pattern. Dodge into him, not away.
  • Jump Attack: He leaps and slams — roll forward under him just before impact.
  • Tail Whip: Easy to dodge — step back or roll sideways.

Your window to attack safely is right after he finishes a combo. Wait for the 3rd or 4th hit, then land 1–2 hits maximum before repositioning. Greed is how you die.

Phase 2: The Holy Sword Enters

Below 60% health, Margit sprouts a glowing golden sword. This dramatically changes his moveset and range. New threats include:

  • Sword Cross Slash: A wide horizontal sweep — roll into it and stay close.
  • Throw Daggers: Ranged dagger toss — dodge sideways, not backward.
  • Extended Combos: He now chains 5–6 hits together. Stay patient and don't guess the end of a combo.

Build-Specific Tips

Build TypeRecommended Strategy
MeleeUse heavy attacks to stagger. Stay aggressive but deliberate.
Mage/IntGlintstone Pebble spam from mid-range. Summon wolves to tank hits.
Faith/DexBleed builds melt him fast — Rivers of Blood or Reduvia work early.
StrengthTrade hits only when his full combo is done. Two-hand for bonus stagger.

The Win Condition

Margit is a pattern game. Once you've memorized his tells — especially the delayed hammer — he becomes predictable. Use Margit's Shackle twice early in Phase 1 to chunk his health, summon the Lone Wolves as a distraction, and always roll toward him, not away. The arena is large enough to create space when you need it.

Stick to this approach, stay calm, and the old man goes down. Welcome to Elden Ring.
